I was only six years old when I met my best friend, and she was only five. It was February 2nd , 2002, my family and I had just landed in the Miami International Airport, eight hours was a long time and frankly, I was just happy to see the ground again. I was born in Brazil and now all of a sudden I’m moving to a strange English speaking country.
My father had been to the U.S three times before we actually moved and when he was here, he was offered a job as a pastor for the new Presbyterian Church. What we didn’t know when we arrived at our new house was that there were going to be some members of the church hidden in the master bedrooms closet. We started looking around to see the new home we were going to be living in, when I got close to the closet all I saw were two big brown eyes staring at me. I jumped back and ran to my mom, she opened the door and everyone yelled out “SURPRISE!”  That was when I saw her, this little girl with a green dress, blonde hair that cascaded down her back. When she jumped out of the closet she went up to me and it seemed like the words coming out of her mouth were coming straight at me at 80 miles per hour, I just stood there listening to her and what sounded like gibberish to me.
After she noticed that I didn’t comprehend anything she was saying, she starts laughing and looks at me and says “Oi, meu nome é Ashley” (“Hi, my name is Ashley.”) We both started laughing and she showed me to my room as if she had been there thousandths of time before. She showed me something I had never seen in my six years of life: A PINK PLASTIC KITCHEN.  It was the greatest invention man had ever made. It was so perfect, so delicate, and so extraordinary. We stayed playing for hours, “The chicken is incredible” she said trying to do a British accent. We played and laughed, she tried to teach me English and I was correcting her on her Portuguese. When it reached 12p.m her mom came in the room and asked if we wanted to go to the playground, “Well of course mother” said Ashley in her almost- there accent.
I met her brother Nickollas, he was just like her just a little bit taller and had a dirty blonde coconut shaped haircut. He and my brother Theo became best friends that same day too. We played on the swing and on the rocking horse all afternoon. Fast forward ten years later, Ashley still comes over and we still act like little kids when we’re together. We never forgot the pink kitchen and giving it up when I had to move to a new house was what seemed like the hardest thing to do. She and I were never in a rush to grow up. At age ten we were still playing dress-up and we only stopped playing with Barbies and Bratz at age thirteen. It’s crazy knowing I’ve known her practically all my live. She knows every secret and even at times when I act like there is nothing wrong, she knows there is something bothering me.
We were in the same school since fourth grade and when we reached eighth grade we promised each other that high school was going to be the best four years of our life. Although in ninth grade we only had two classes together, we always made the most of it. Annoying teachers because we talked and laughed so loudly. However, in March of 2011 I had moved to Boca Raton and I found out that I was no longer going to be attending Monarch High School. We didn’t like to talk about that subject so we just pretended like I was never moving. When summer ’11 came, I went to Brazil for two months and when I came back, I only had two weeks with her. Even though I don’t see her as much as I’d like to, we still talk and hang out on the weekends. Earlier this year we celebrated our ten year anniversary on February 2nd, 2012. She’s is and forever will be my best friend.
